£100* Student Competition

Amying eBooks are always on the look out for new talent. In this respect we are offering a series of prizes for Students.

Our first competition is aimed at Full-time University students studying sociology, philosophy or politics (although any university student is eligible). This is a provocative essay, and is aimed to stimulate what has been a stifled debate in recent years.

You are asked to write an essay based on one of the following titles:

A. In the United Kingdom, is it easier for someone from a middle class ethnic minority to be financially successful than someone from a working class background?

B. Voltaire once said, "I may disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it." How does Voltaire's view of democracy compare with modern day 'political correctness'

C. Positive discrimination is racist or sexist or both, and is just plain wrong. Discuss.

D. 'No Platform' Student Unions are an infringement of human rights. Discuss.

The essay should be between 2000 - 3000 words.

The winner will be awarded £100*.

To enter the competition, simply email your entry (txt, pdf or word format) by the end of December 2004. Don' forget to include your name, contact details. Please also state which University, department and year group you are in (this has no bearing on the decision to award the winning prize, and the prize will be awarded purely on merit).

Rules:

1. All participants must agree fully and unconditionally to the rules outlined here, and by sending an entry they automatically agree to do so.
2. The essay should be the entirely the work of a single student, and not infringe any copyright rules.
3. All entrants must be 18 years old or over.
4. Standard essay rules - bibliography, footnotes, etc. - must be adhered to. Statistical examples and quotes must be verifiable.
